A nice picture but lackingApr 19, 2012
By A. M. Miller I'm surprised I can put this puzzle together very well as the pieces do not connect firmly, they do not interlock but just lay in place, leaving a lot of play between the pieces. Any movement dislodges them which is frustrating. I was hoping I could put together the various quilts then shift them into place but with the way the pieces fit together, this is impossible. It is even disruptive to existing completed sections to add/subtract pieces, they do not hold well when moved in any way. This makes putting it together harder & one must be careful of any movement/touch to sections that are complete as the connections are very easily broken & one must start over again. I enjoy working on a board that allows me to transfer a puzzle into another room if I want to watch TV with my husband, which is not possible with this Dowdle puzzle. Recently, I moved a Springbok puzzle, set it on the table & walked away, only to hear a terrible sound. I came back to find the puzzle on the floor in a pile. When I retrieved it, I found MOST of the sections remained intact! I hate to admit it, this has happened more than once, but each time, the Springbok puzzles stayed mostly together. If that happened with this Dowdle puzzle, not one connection would remain. The Dowdle pieces are very thin and small unlike Springbok pieces which are thicker & easier to use. To me, the pieces are too small for the intricate design of this puzzle.
Along with the ill-fitting pieces, this puzzle comes in a small box that folds over & is held closed with magnets, not the more usual larger box with a top, displaying the photograph of the puzzle and the bottom, where there is room to sort through pieces. The picture of the Dowdle puzzle is not on its box, but is on the sleeve the box came in. This, being too small to be a guide to assemble the puzzle, they've included a larger, folded glossy picture to unfold & place somewhere supportive to use as a guide. This is cumbersome. I needed to locate another box for sorting pieces and work to place the guide-picture where glare doesn't inhibit viewing as well as supporting it against something.
Although the subject is interesting, I don't recommend this puzzle as it is more frustrating than fun & I'm sorry I bought it, and a second one, without first trying them out. I spent a lot of money on 2 puzzles that do not bring satisfaction or fun. I should have known better but had hope & expectation in trying something new.
